Sheila's Decorating
68 Orchard Street; 212-777-3767
This warm and friendly shop is filled with resplendent textiles and one-of-a-kind pillows everywhere you look. Nearly three quarters of the business is to "civilians," so the salespeople and staff designers are well equipped to dispense advice and guidance. Fabrics are a good buy here, too -- I spied some pricey "uptown" goods for $150 a yard that could easily sell for $600 a yard elsewhere. Owner Sheila Mark loves the versatility of slipcovers. "You put the shmatte on, you take the shmatte off," she says, laughing, "and you get a new feeling in a room." Prices start at around $125 for a club or wing chair ($50 for back cushion) and $250 for a love seat ($50 each for back cushions); elaborate Parsons-style chairs, with abundant dress-making details are $250 each.
TENEMENT MUSEUM
A native New Yorker by way of Staten Island and Brooklyn, Sheila Marks began in the decorating business by selling just wallpaper from a counter on Grand Street. Today, Sheila's Decorating offers top designers the right solutions for all their residential design needs. Every project is completed with the utmost attention to detail.
Just like the Tenement Museum, Sheila's Decorating is 'not just wallpaper' and has been about design since 1974. An emporium of custom furniture- from uniquely crafted tables, lamps, chairs, headboards, beds, sofas, and ottomans to custom built-in cabinets, bookcases, and wall units, Sheila's Decorating has it all at one convenient location. Designers can have items custom made to fit their client's special needs and commercial work and personal shopping is always welcome.
Owner Sheila Marks stocks her 8,000 square foot retail and wholesale store with the highest quality American and European fabrics, wall-coverings, and furnishings. Frequent buying trips assure the latest styles and many of the pieces and patterns are one-of-a-kind and can only be found here on Orchard Street. The store will gladly ship these items to anywhere in the world or deliver to your home in New York City.
Some of the wallpaper in the Museum's apartments is made for us by Scalamandre, and purchase of those patterns can be arranged at Sheila's Decorating. Visit Sheila's when the urge to decorate strike- particularly after being inspired to beautify your home like one of the families of 97 Orchard Street.
NEW JERSEY JEWISH NEWS
A Package of Personality
Quick and simple changes in a room's decor can completely transform a homeowner's living space.
So says Shira Reiz, manager/ head designer of Sheila's Decorating in New York.
Whether it's repainting a room or changing the wallpaper, get rid of heavy drapes, adding crown molding, reupholstering furniture, rearranging accessories, altering lighting or updating pillows: homeowners can update their living space withput completely changing their style, says Reiz.
"A new coat of paint or wallpaper will make practically any space look fresh and clean," says Reiz. "Wall coverings significantly alter the mood of a room. Dark color add drama and intimacy, light colors open up an area, and neutral colors are calming but need some variation to keep an interesting look."
The trend for walls these days are deep colors like chocolate brown bedrooms accented with pink blush or baby blue: eggplant powder rooms offset with a glamorous light fixture; or a deep red dining room, says Reiz.
Changing window treatments from heavy drapes to softer fabrics, such as silks or sheers, will brighten up windows, she says.
Adding crown molding defines an area and gives interest to ceilings, staircases, wallpaper, and chair rails.
Other changes homeowners can make to enliven their homes include reupholstering a favorite piece of furniture from a traditional style to a modern funky fabric, scaling down or regrouping accessories to avoid clutter, mounting a chandelier made of glass, stainless steel, or raffia in an unusual spot like a powder room, updating sofa pillows with "luxurious fabrics and fabulous trims."
in business for 25 years, Sheila's Decorating is a "complete interior design store." Its 4,000-square-foot showroom features fabrics, trimming, wallpaper, pillows, upholstery, furniture, shades, and blinds.
"I do it all," says Reiz, who has been with the company for 17 years. Sheila's Decorating currently has four designers on staff.
"We work with a customer step by step on the decorating process," says Reiz. "We're very price-consciouse. We decorate the way people live, not show pieces."
In addition to homes, Sheila's Decorating has commercial clients too, such as restaurants, retail stores, nursing homes, and business lobbies.
Whether traditional, eclectic, modern, or transitional, Reiz says, "Anything can go as long as it's done well. People are looking at their homes as a complete picture rather than just a sofa and nothing else. They're realizing it's a complete room, a complete home; it's a whole package. That's what really gives it a sense of who's living there. it gives it the personality of the person."
Sheila's Decorating is known as "a hot spot for vintage wallpapers," adds Reiz. Because of the old styles it carries, set designers use the company's wallpaper and fabrics in their movies, television shows, and advertisements.
